0700 – Understanding Body Language: Feet

Updated: November 20, 2009

A General Insight About Relationships

Body language can be an essential tool to understanding the emotions of others and improving workplace relationships. Carol Kinsey Goman, an HR speaker and expert on body language, recently attended a human resources congress where she observed a speaker answering questions. He appeared to be relaxed, at ease, and confident. When the questions took a turn and began to address the controversial issue of executive compensation, however, his foot began making tiny anxious kicks. Although his upper body appeared relaxed, his feet indicated that he was feeling tense.

As Goman points out, feet often give away signals a person may be consciously keeping under control in other parts of the body. For both good and bad signals, keep an eye out for the body language of feet.
