0540 – Training Family Members
Updated: November 20, 2009
An Internal Threat Relating to Training
On your family farm, some of your employees will inevitably be family members. When you begin training them, you will need to ensure that the employee who happens to be family is held just as accountable to a clear job description as employees who aren’t family. As well, you will need to make sure that the training of a family member who has likely learned many things growing up is consistent with the training of any other employee.
Before a family member begins working, create a job description for them that’s in keeping in tone, style, and format with the job descriptions of your other employees. Make sure you include objectives, timelines, and pay scale whenever possible- and then follow through. Keep this in mind while orienting them to the job, training them, and throughout the length of their employment.
