0244 – Underperforming Employees

Updated: July 24, 2009

An Internal Threat Relating to Placement

The first rule of firing an employee is to do such a great job of hiring so you never have to fire, says Angela Santiago of The Little Potato Company. Use good recruitment and a careful interview process that allows you to evaluate a candidate as the best way to avoid firing, but despite precautions, employees sometimes still underperform.

Before firing, consider your methods. Have you given the employee everything required in training to allow them to do their job properly? Have you give them feedback so they know they aren’t meeting your expectations? Have you given them all the tools they need to succeed? If so, it’s time to let the employee go.

Categories(s)

  • Placement

Insights categorized under “Placement” are connected to ideas of an employee’s fit and role within a company, matching skills to job requirements, and filling positions with the right people.

  • Internal Threats relating to Placement

The eSHR Guide makes use of a modified SWOT-style classification to group our HR Insights. Insights determined to fall into the “threats” category are strategic-level factors related to an HR-related policy or action that if not addressed may be harmful to the company or individuals involved. Insights classified as “internal” are those deemed to be controlled directly by the policy or action of the company or management.
